For many of us, it is hard to get into the Christmas spirit. We think about the presents, the lists, the baking, the bank accounts. And it is extremely daunting. Although this post won’t help you avoid those tasks, it will hopefully inspire you to want to do those tasks.
For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. — Isaiah 9:6 (CSB)
How lucky are we? A beautifully and perfectly made child is given to us, to hold the government on his shoulders alone. To become our God, a Father, a bringer of peace, and a counselor for all. Someone who is constantly at our side, guiding us through all of our troubles and tests through life.
For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
— John 3:16 (CSB)
As Christmas is a celebration for us all, a new life for us, a Savior come to redeem us. What better gift have we than His presence. This is something we all need a reminder of. When people are trampling each other for a new TV, or teenagers are crying over the wrong colored iPhone, remember what this life is really about: a second chance.
Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: See, the virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel. — Isaiah 7:14 (CSB)
The Lord does not abandon us in times of trouble. When a virgin was with child, in a world where she usually be stoned to death, the Lord sent her and her future husband a sign. He shielded and protected them from harm. He chose them to help bring His kingdom to the people of the world. Just as He has shielded us, and chosen us to bring forth His word.
he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death — even to death on a cross. For this reason, God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow — in heaven and on earth and under the earth — Philippians 2:8-10 (CSB)
From the very first moment of His glorious plan, God knew that His son would bring everlasting life to the people of God, but He also knew what a great sacrifice His son would have to go through to give us, daily sinners, this everlasting life. He goes through pain, just like we do, and He knew from the start the pain He would be in to give us what we don’t deserve.
Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people he favors! — Luke 2:14 (CSB)
Christmas is a time to celebrate His glorious name, and to remember the sacrifice He gave for us. It is not about the gifts, the TV specials, the amount of money spent, but it’s about giving Him the glory and honor that He deserves.
